Two financial consulting firms have produced research criticizing the U.S. stock market’s maker-taker pricing or rebate system.

A 75-page independent study by Woodbine Associates reveals that ordinary investors, mutual funds, and pension funds are losing about $5 billion annually from rebates to stockbrokers. Other financial firms said that Woodbine’s estimates are high, but admitted that there could be a potential conflict of interest if stock exchanges pay rebates to stockbrokers instead of forcing the brokers to find the best prices for their clients.

Parliament to Vote on Amendment to the Financial Services bill

Labour Party’s Member of Parliament Stella Creasy has introduced an amendment to the Financial Services bill which will set a maximum cap on what payday lenders can charge for their financial services.

The Financial Services bill is intended to change the way banks are regulated. Included in the bill is the formation of Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to regulate banks and to take place of its predecessor the Financial Services Authority. The FCA will also regulate consumer credit which was previously done by the Office of Fair Trading.
